Functional Safety Assessment
A Functional Safety Assessment (FSA) is an independent review of a complex safety system to determine its compliance with certain Australian and international safety standards, giving consideration to all aspects of the system, from design and implementation through to operation and monitoring procedures. It provides a detailed insight into the specific areas of the system that may not yet meet the required standards, allowing system developers to make the necessary corrections to ensure compliance, and giving purchasers of such systems reassurance that all the required safety standards have been met.
Complex safety systems are generally designed in compliance with Australian safety standards AS61508, AS61511, AS62061, AS4024, or ISO13849. To comply with AS61508 and AS61511, a new safety system must have at least one Functional Safety Assessment prior to implementation, and further FSAs periodically throughout the life of the system. For standards where an FSA is not a mandatory requirement, it is often still the most effective tool to evaluate system compliance.
